Sweden’s premier medical school, the Karolinska Institute (KI), was founded
in 1810 for the purpose of training surgeons to treat soldiers wounded on
the battlefield. KI gradually developed into a comprehensive medical
university over the years, and today its mission is to improve the health
of mankind through research, education and information. There are currently
6,000 full-time students enrolled in the university’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programs,
and a full 40% of the medical research in Sweden is carried out there. Moreover,
the affiliated KI Science Park ensures that this research sees practical application in
cutting-edge medical technology.
KI’s campus, located north of Stockholm in the city of Solna, consists mostly of lowrise
brick buildings. In contrast, the new Aula Medica, with its leaning glass façade
and geometric design, really stands out. This state-of-the-art lecture hall complex
includes offices, restaurants, and a 1000-seat auditorium, ideal for major public events
like the Nobel Lectures. What does KI have to do with the Nobels? In his will, Alfred Nobel wrote
that winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine should be selected by a group
of 50 Karolinska professors, a tradition that has continued to this day.
While Solna does have sights like Haga Park and medieval Solna Church, it’s basically
just a sleepy suburb of Stockholm. Luckily, the attractions of central Stockholm are just
minutes away. In historic Gamla Stan (Old Town), you can see the magnificent Royal
Palace and Stockholm Cathedral, and learn more about Nobel winners at the Nobel Museum.
Two more interesting museums can be found on the nearby island of Djurgården,
the ABBA Museum and Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. And if you still have time,
you can go shopping in exclusive Östermalm or take a boat tour and see beautiful Stockholm
from the water.
