Delhi, the capital of India, is one of the
oldest cities in the world. The first mention of it
appears in the epic Mahabharata, and over the
course of its 5,000-year history, Delhi has gone
through many transitions. For this reason, it
shows several unique faces to visitors, from the
ancient mosques and narrow, winding lanes of
Islamic Old Delhi, to the British-era government
buildings and wide, tree-lined avenues of New
Delhi. There’s so much to see, eat and buy here
that it can be overwhelming; luckily, beautiful
green spaces like Lodhi Gardens can be found
throughout Delhi, offering perfect spots for rest
and reflection.
Delhi’s top attractions include the Red
Fort, an impressive collection of palaces, halls
and gardens built for the 17th century Mughal
Emperor Shah Jahan, and Humayun’s Tomb, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as a
model for India’s most famous landmark, the
Taj Mahal. And don’t miss the Lotus Temple, a
Baha’i house of worship constructed of white
marble in the shape of a lotus, which is
particularly striking at night. As the seat of
government, Delhi has been home to India’s
most prominent leaders. To learn about the
life of Mahatma Gandhi, whose movement
of nonviolent resistance led to Indian
independence from Great Britain in 1947,
visit the Gandhi Smriti, his last residence and
the site of his assassination. Jawaharlal
Nehru, Gandhi ’s disciple and India’s
first prime minister, also has a museum
dedicated to his life in Delhi.
Delhi is also a paradise for shoppers and
foodies. Browse the diverse markets and
bazaars at Connaught Place for everything
from saris to sitars. And from spicy curries to tasty
chaat-Northern Indian street snacks-Delhi has
some of the best food in the subcontinent.
