Founded by the Catholic Church in the 12th century, the University of Paris,
better known as the Sorbonne, is one of the world’s oldest and most famous
universities. The name Sorbonne comes from the Sorbonne College,
which was established in 1257 by theologian Robert de Sorbon and
would later become the core of the university. Although the school’s
purpose was to train young men for the clergy, the curriculum gradually
expanded to include medicine, law and the arts. The Sorbonne became
a model for other European universities, and by the end of the Middle Ages
was the most important cultural and scientific center on the continent.
While the school became part of the University of France after the French Revolution,
it reopened a century later in 1896. Finally, as a result of mass student protests in 1968
—part of a larger French social and cultural revolution—the University of Paris was
divided into 13 separate institutions. Three of these contain the name Sorbonne today:
University of Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne; Par is III, New Sorbonne; and Paris IV,
Paris-Sorbonne.
These three schools, all public research institutions that focus on the arts and humanities,
continue the tradition of academic excellence established by the original university.
The old Sorbonne is located on the Left Bank of the Seine River in Paris’ Latin Quarter,
so named because Latin was the lingua franca of the university in its early days.
Historic campus buildings, like the 17th century domed chapel containing the tomb
of Cardinal Richelieu, are normally closed to the public, but it may be possible to arrange
a tour. The Sorbonne is surrounded by bohemian cafés and bistros, and is close to Left Bank
attractions like the Panthéon, Musée du Moyen Age and Jardin du Luxembourg. And if you
have more time to spend in the City of Lights, of course you won’t want to miss famous sights
like the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower.
