A lot of clothes aren’t always recyclable, as some are made from plastics. When they’re sat in landfill sites like these, they can be surrounded by other plastic items and waste too. Which makes it harder for them to decompose. These big piles of clothes could sit here for up to 200 Years!

Because of the way some fabrics are made, there are certain materials that aren’t that friendly to the environment and can't biodegrade.

It means they can't be broken down and put back into the earth. This isn't good as it contributes to a major global warming problem as the clothes that sit here in landfill let off greenhouse gases, such as methane. As the fabrics can’t be broken down, they release chemicals which can be toxic. These chemicals can pollute our water and air.
Yikes! I do not like the sound of that. But how does landfill and what you’re saying have anything to do with us?!
Well as fashion consumers, how we buy clothes has a big effect on the environment and even more so on the planet! Our actions can play a big part in reducing the waste in the fashion industry. Otherwise, these landfills will keep getting even bigger! And pollution greater too.
