10-多伦多大学歌词完整版
The University of Toronto was established in 1827 in the town of York,
capital of Upper Canada, which later became Ontario.
Like Columbia University, the school was also founded by royal charter
as King’s College. When the college opened its doors in 1843, it was
a religious institution run by Anglican clergy. But just six years later,
the provincial government voted to secularize the school and rename
it the University of Toronto (York had become Toronto in 1834).
UToronto subsequently experienced rapid growth, adding schools of medicine,
law and engineering, and evolving into a collegiate university that would
eventually consist of 12 separate colleges.
Today, Toronto is Canada’s top school, and one of the largest in North America,
with a student body o f over 80,000 and faculty of 12,000. It’s also Canada’s
foremost research institution, with an international reputation for the quality
of its research in both the arts and sciences.
Important contributions include the Toronto School of communication theory,
the discovery of insulin and the T-cell receptor, and the invention of the first
practical electron microscope. But research at Toronto isn’t just for Ph.D. candidates.
Students are encouraged to participate in research as early as their freshman year,
and through the Research Opportunity Program, they can earn credit by taking part
in year-long off-campus research projects.
The UToronto campus, located just north of downtown Toronto, is filled with green spaces
and beautiful stone architecture. Worth visiting are the Romanesque University College
building, which houses an excellent collection of Byzantine art, and the Gothic Revival
Hart House, famous for its beautiful stained-glass windows. Other sights in the campus
area include the vast Royal Ontario Museum, the fascinating Bata Shoe Museum and
the pink-stone Ontario Legislature building.
If you have more time, you can go fashion shopping on Mink Mile, eat at an ethnic eatery
in Kensington Market or catch a show in the Theatre District. And don’t forget to ride the glass
elevator to the top of CN Tower for stunning views of the city
