Breath of Fire – For Energy, Clarity & Focus

Hello … I’m Robert Bahedry. Welcome to Breathe with Robert and this guided meditation for Clarity, Focus, and Energy … Today we’re working with a yoga breathing technique known as Breath of Fire. In Sanskrit, it is called Kappala Bhati Pranayama and this translates to ‘Skull Shining’ breath.

This very powerful, heating, active breathing meditation oxygenates and purifies the blood and boosts your energy levels. It can strengthen your heart, lungs, and nervous system by moving your energy from the lower parts of the body and all the way up to your skull, removing any toxins, stuck or stagnant energy in the process. You can do this every day and all it takes is 5 minutes of your time and it’s a great alternative to caffeine.

You SHOULD NOT practice Breath of Fire if you have spinal disorders, cardiac issues, respiratory infections, or you are in your second trimester of pregnancy, or if you’re in the first three days of your menstrual cycle. As with any type of meditation practice, do not do ‘Breath of Fire’ while driving, operating heavy machinery, while swimming or surfing.

You’ll do this exercise seated. You can be cross-legged on the ground on sitting in a chair. The most important thing is to sit with your spine straight with your ribcage slightly lifted, relieving any pressure on your lower body – in particular, your diaphragm - which will make it easier for you to practice this breathing technique.

Breath of Fire is a little unique in that it entails short, rhythmic, active exhales at your navel – pumping air OUT of the body - coupled with passive inhales. The diaphragm moves the breath up the body with the active exhales, creating a vacuum and as the diaphragm relaxes on the passive inhales, air moves back into the lungs once again. So, the work is done on the exhale. It’s quite a quick breathing technique usually compared to the rhythm of a dog panting. You may also get a little lightheaded as you learn to get the hang of it. If that happens, take a break, and pick back up when the lightheadedness passes.

Breath of Fire is done entirely through your nose so let’s practice, starting slowly with one breath per second … relax the belly … exhale sharply then relax the belly again … here we go … relax. Now let’s try the breath, a little quicker rhythm at two breath per second … and that is breath of fire.

We will now do 5 minutes of Breath of Fire. If you get tired, take a break, and pick the breath back up at your pace. Let’s begin … Settle into your sacred space. Sit up tall. Close your eye and connect with your natural breath … Relax your jaw … Relax your shoulders … Relax your hips … Take a deep inhale through your nose … open your mouth and sigh it out … Inhale again … Exhale … One more, inhale … and exhale … Let it go!

To help you to focus on the breathing technique, you may choose to place one hand on your navel at the beginning. Once you’ve established the breath, you can place your hands on your lap, palms facing upwards, with your thumb and forefinger lightly touching. Take half a breath into your belly and begin the breath …

Let go of the Breath of Fire and take a nice deep inhale through your nose … SFX … open mouth and exhale. Find stillness and take moment to notice how you are feeling … thank yourself for showing up today and completing another day of self-care, self-love, and spiritual practice. Gently open your eyes, grab a drink of water, take your time as you get back up and get on with your day.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of sharing this breathing meditation with you and I look forward to practicing with you again soon. Have an amazing day. Namaste.
