Founded in 1386 by papal bull, Heidelberg University is the oldest institute of
higher learning in Germany. Interestingly, the school owes its existence to the
election of two rival Popes, one in France and one in Rome.
When German leaders gave their support to Rome, German teachers and
students at the Sorbonne in Paris were forced to leave. Sensing an opportunity,
Rupert I, a German ruler within the Holy Roman Empire, asked for and received
permission to establish a university in Heidelberg. Modeled after the Sorbonne,
the school included four faculties: philosophy, theology, law and medicine.
Over the centuries, Heidelberg played a key role in European intellectual and
religious movements, including humanism in the 15th century, the Reformation
in the 16th century and Romanticism in the 19th century.
Despite dark days during the Nazi era and violent student protests in the 1960s
and ’70s, Heidelberg has since regained its reputation, and is now the top
university in Germany. As an international research university, Heidelberg
attracts students and researchers from all over the world—a full third of
doctoral candidates are international students. With this strong emphasis on
research, it isn’t surprising that there are 56 Nobel laureates associated
with Heidelberg, mostly in the fields of medicine, physics and chemistry.
While the university’s facilities are scattered around Heidelberg, the most historic
can be found around the Universitätsplatz in the Old Town on the south
bank of the Neckar River. Highlights include the Baroque Alte Universität,
which houses an exhibition on the school’s history, and the Studentenkarzer,
where students were imprisoned for bad behavior as recently as 1914. And on
the nearby Marktplaz you’ll find the imposing Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit and
the Hercules Fountain, where criminals were chained in medieval times. Finally,
for the best views of the city’s most famous attraction, the half-ruined Heidelberg
Castle, take a stroll along the Philosopher’s Walk, a scenic hiking path on the
north bank of the Neckar.
