After establishing the city’s first library and fire department, Founding Father
and prominent Philadelphia resident Benjamin Franklin turned his attention
to education. Aiming to train young people for leadership in business,
government and public service, Franklin founded the Academy, College
and Charitable School of Philadelphia in 1749, and served as its president
until 1755. Like its founder, the school was responsible for many firsts—it
established North America’s first medical school (1765), was the first American
institution of higher learning to be named a university (1779), and founded the
country’s first business school (1881).
The University of Pennsylvania’s reputation for innovation has continued up
