from the ashes of ancient giant stars.
Scratch your nose. What do you see under your nail? Nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, building blocks of life. There is our old friend, the carbon atom, which with all the other atoms was a long time ago in the core of a giant star. Then the star died in an explosion, spreading all its atoms into space. The carbon atom ended up in a cloud of gas and dust, out of which condensed our Sun and the planets. You are nuclear waste, you are stardust, billion year old carbon, a child of the stars, a grandchild of the universe.
First now we are starting to understand the true story of our lives, much longer and more incredible than any myth or religion dared to offer. Cosmic evolution, physical evolution and chemical evolution made the world ever more complex, until on the surface of a planet there appeared a bunch of molecules which made a copy of itself. The mother of all the living creatures on Earth was born, and biological evolution got going.
And now, somewhere on the African savanna, the carbon atom has become a part of the brain in a creature which for the first time lifts its eyes up towards the stars and announces to the universe: I am.
All life is one. Help an earthworm over the asphalt, hug a tree, pet a cat: in the great story of evolution they all are our second cousins, all descendants of the same mother. Again and again death gives birth to new life, increasinly more strange and surprising. Four billion years of the life of Father Sun and Mother Earth, four thousand million years of the endless dance of atoms and molecules to the tune of law, chance, and natural selection.
Mankind invents fire, art, agriculture and the steam engine. He discovers the world and spreads to its every corner, bringing development and destruction.
A bone cudgel leaves the caveman’s hand, rises higher and higher, and becomes a spaceship starting to fly towards the Moon and the stars.
