While Rome may be bigger and older, and
Venice more romantic,Florence jus t may be
Italy’s top destination for lovers of art and culture.
Founded on the banks of the Arno river in central Italy by the Romans in
59 B.C., Florence became one of Europe’s most
prosperous and powerful cities during the
Middle Ages. Wealthy families like the Medici,
who were bankers to the Pope, became
patrons of the arts and sciences, leading
to the birth of the Renaissance. The Italian
Renaissance soon spread to the rest of Italy
and Europe, and Florence took its place as the
continent’s cultural capital.
Even today, Florence has such a high
concentration of Renaissance architecture
and art that the entire historic center has been
declared a World Heritage Site. Within the old
city’s Medieval walls, the top attraction is Santa
Maria del Fiore—better known as the Duomo—
with its green, white and pink marble façade
and Brunelleschi-designed dome. Also on the
Piazza del Duomo are Giotto’s Campanile,
which offers stunning views of the city, and
the Florence Baptistery, renowned for its
beautiful gilded bronze doors.
Next is the Palazzo Vecchio, a former
Medici palace that now serves as Florence’s city
hall. In front stands a replica of Michelangelo’s
David—the original is in the Accademia Gallery
to the north—and next door is the Uffizi Gallery,
which houses the world’s finest collection of
Italian paintings, including works by Botticelli,
da Vinci, and Michelangelo.
From there, visitors can take the Medieval Ponte Vecchio
across the Arno to visit Palazzo Pitti—another Medici residence that is
now a museum—and nearby Boboli Gardens,
known for its elegant statues and city views.
Florence is also a fashion Mecca, and
the high-end designer boutiques of Via de’
Tornabuoni are enough to keep shopaholics
happy for days. And in between purchases,
be sure to try local specialties like bistecca
alla fiorentina, lampredotto and gelato—which
Florentines swear is the best in Italy.
