In summer 2014, all eyes were on Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil as it hosted the final match of
the World Cup. After a short respite, Rio will
again welcome the world when it plays host to
the 2016 Summer Olympics. While some have
criticized these costly events for failing to
benefit ordinary Brazilians, they have brought
about a major makeover for this port city
of 6.3 million. So there’s no better time than
now to experience Rio’s many delights, from its
natural beauty to its fun-loving culture.
Among Rio’s most iconic attractions is, of
course, Christ the Redeemer. Standing atop
2,000-foot Corcovado Mountain, this Art Deco
statue commands an impressive view of Rio,
his arms open as if to embrace the city below.
For more stunning vistas, there’s also Sugar
Loaf Mountain, a 396 m granite peak at the
mouth of Guanabara Bay. Take the two-stage
cable car ride to the top in the late afternoon,
and be prepared for the most amazing sunset
of your life. If sand and surf are more
your thing, just head to Rio’s magnificent
beaches, like Copacabana, Ipanema and
Leblon—the only thing more beautiful than
the scenery is the Cariocas in their skimpy
swimwear.
In Rio’s Centro district, you can find many
reminders of Brazil’s colonial past. See
where Portuguese viceroys once lived at the
Paço Imperial, or attend a performance at the
Theatro Municipal, inspired by
the Paris Opera. Or for a taste
of Rio’s famous nightlife, hit a
samba club in the lively Lapa
neighborhood, or take the tram
up the hill and go bar hopping in
quaint Santa Teresa. With so
much to offer, it’s no wonder
Rio is known as the Cidade
Maravilhosa!
