A story of humans
There are heroes who leave their homeland and travel, endure hard times and suffer from the grief of separation, in order to gain time and existence.
The story I am about to tell you, is about two troubadours, who love Persia and have gone on a journey in search of the Jâme-Jam, a holy grail. It is said that when you drink from this grail your voice becomes enchanting and makes it impossible for people not to listen to you. When the two troubadours reach the ancient city of Neyshabour in the East, they hear an old man singing in the alleys
** PERSIAN POETRY **
Whether at Neyshabour or Babylon,
Whether the Cup with Sweet or Bitter Run,
The Wine of Life keeps oozing Drop by Drop;
The Leaves of Life keep dropping One by One.
The encounter with the old man is enough to reassure the two travelers that this city has enlightening tales for them in store, and they are hoping to catch a glimpse of the holy grail. So under the moonlight, they walk through the garden to a tavern.
When they reach the tavern, they order wine and start drinking.
But when they look at the bottle, they see that something is written on it:
** PERSIAN POETRY **
‘How sweet is mortal Sovranty!’ – think some. Others – ‘How blest the Paradise to come!’ Ah, take the Cash and let the Credit go Nor heed the rumble of a distant Drum!
Because the men are very tired from their long trip, they slowly close their eyes and now fall into a deep sleep, when suddenly a voice recites:
** PERSIAN POETRY **
The wisdom, when I am sleeping calls me, The flower should open with the morning skies. And a retreating whisper, as I awake, The flower that once has blown forever dies!
The two troubadours, startled from their sleep and now awake, look surprised at each other, saying it must have been the wine to give them this illusion. They look again at their cups and take another sip, when suddenly the voice sounds again:
** PERSIAN POETRY **
Dreaming when Dawn's Left Hand was in the Sky I heard a Voice within the Tavern Cry, "Awake, my Little ones, and fill the Cup Before Life's Liquor in its Cup be Dry.”
The two troubadours, looking for the grail, knew that whoever finds it, will lead a prosperous, rich and happy life.
But at this point they had lost hope, and in a courage of despair they wished the wise man could help them out. The wise man told them:
** PERSIAN POETRY **
Waste not your Hour, nor in the Vain Pursuit Of This and That endeavour and dispute; Better be merry with the fruitful grape Than sadden after none, or bitter, fruit.
After hearing this answer, the two troubadours got absorbed in deep thoughts and asked the wise man how they could find a map with directions to the grail. The wise man answered them and said:
You two have to listen to the story of the Simorgh in order to find it. They answered hesitantly: But the Simorgh is a legend! How can we believe this? The wise man replied:
** PERSIAN POETRY **
Ah, my Beloved, fill the cup that clears Today of past Regrets and future Fears — Tomorrow? — Why, To-morrow I may be Myself with Yesterday's Sev'n Thousand Years.
To reach the truth and to understand the words of the wise man, you must now slowly drink of the wine and listen to the Story, only then it will be revealed to you!
For "IS" and “IS-NOT", though with Rule and Line, And "Up-And-Down" without, I could define, Of all that one should care to fathom, I Was never deep in anything but – Wine.
