The Waiting Room
In the station shop
I bought a sign that said:
Waiting Room
And I took it home
I put it on my bedroom door
And went inside to wait
I wasn't sure
What I was waiting for
Nor what time it would come, if at all
There were no timetables
Although I was tempted
To compile one
Start pretending I knew
What was going to happen
And set it in train
At the designated hour
The opposite
Was also a temptation:
To give up
Convinced that
What I anticipated
Did not exist
So could never arrive
But I held myself
Between these two positions
With two good strong bungees
Across my front
And around my back
So I could feel
The tension increase
When I pushed
Forward or flopped back
Or lost focus and drifted away
From simply waiting
It's hard to keep a mind open
It's bewildering to wait
Especially when you don't know
What you're waiting for
I imagine I'm a taxi
Driver at airport arrivals
I hold a sign
With the name of a stranger
Scan the traffic
Of incoming passengers
I'm looking for the face
Which will approach me
With the relief
In its eyes which says:
I've found you
Thank you for waiting for me:
I'm your idea
I'm your poem
I'm your instruction for the day
I'm the memory of something
That you put away long ago
That I need you to get out again
I'm the unexpected nudge
To go to the charity shop
I'm the coat that you'll find there
With a phone number
In its pocket that you will call
I'm the opportunity
That you will not take
If you are not waiting for me
