The University of Melbourne was founded by an act of the Parliament of
Victoria in 1853, two years after the University of Sydney, making Melbourne
the second oldest university in Australia. Established with revenue from
Victoria’s gold rush, the institution was designed to be a civilizing
influence during a time of rapid settlement and development. Classes
commenced in 1855 with three professors and 16 students, only
four of whom graduated. From these humble beginnings, Melbourne
has grown to become Australia’s top university, with a student body
of 47,000, including 12,000 international students from 130 countries.
Under the Melbourne Model, introduced in 2008 to align the school with
European and North American universities, the university offers
well-rounded undergraduate study in 11 faculties and highly specialized
research and professional programs at the graduate level.
Melbourne is also Australia’s top research university- only the government
spends more on research—and is renowned for its achievements in the
medical and biotech fields. The cochlear implant, which has brought
hearing to over 200,000 deaf people, was developed here in the 1970s,
and Melbourne researchers are currently working on the world’s first bionic eye.
As one of Australia’s sandstone universities—equivalent to America’s Ivy League
—Melbourne is famous for its Gothic Revival sandstone architecture.
Notable examples include the Old Quadrangle and Baldwin Spencer Building,
as well as the residential colleges that make up the College Crescent.
Located just north of the city center, the university is close to many of Melbourne’s
top attractions, including Queen Victoria Market, Old Melbourne Gaol, Carlton Gardens
and Parliament House.
And for a look at Australia’s famous wildlife, be sure to visit Melbourne Aquarium
and Melbourne Zoo—the world’s oldest. Finally, end your day with a cruise on the
Yarra River, which runs through the heart of the city.
