Founded in 1701 by a group of Congregationalist ministers
in the Colony of Connecticut, Yale University is the second
oldest university in the United States.After changing locations
several times, the institution—first known as the Collegiate
School—found a permanent home in New Haven in 1718.
That same year, the school’s name was changed to Yale College
in recognition of British merchant Elihu Yale, who made a large
donation of books and goods. Like Harvard, Yale started
out as a seminary, but began adding humanities and science
courses in the late 18th century, and became a full university in 1887.
While Yale offers a full range of graduate and professional programs,
it’s most famous for the quality of its undergraduate liberal arts
curriculum. Most professors are required to teach undergraduate
courses, and the student- faculty ratio is the lowest in the Ivy League.
Also noteworthy are Yale Law, which has produced ten Supreme Court
justices and over 70 members of congress, and Yale Drama, whose
alumni include Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver.
But Yale is perhaps best known for producing leaders, including five
U.S. presidents—Bill Clinton and both Bushes are Yalies—and other heads
of state from all over the world. With its historic architecture and many
museums and galleries, the Yale campus is a popular tourist attraction.
The easiest way to see the campus is on a free student-led tour, which
includes several of Yale’s Gothic residential colleges, the cathedral-like
Sterling Memorial Library and the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript
Library. And if you’re an art lover, you won’t want to miss the Yale
UniversityArt Gallery, which is filled with American and European
masterpieces, and the Yale Center for British Art, which holds the largest
British art collection outside the U.K.
