Looking at the city
today, one would never
guess that Dubai was once just a small fishing
village. Located in the Arabian Desert on the
Persian Gulf, Dubai gradually grew into an
important trading port. The city really began
to boom after the discovery of oil in 1966,
and since joining the United Arab Emirates in
1971, Dubai has developed into an international
metropolis and the top tourist destination in
the Middle East.
Perhaps the best symbol of Dubai’s rise
is the minaret-inspired Burj Khalifa, which at
a height of 830 meters is currently the tallest
building in the world. At the Top, an outside
observation deck on the 124th floor, is the
best spot to watch the amazing dancing Dubai
Fountain in Burj Khalifa Lake at the base of the
tower, and provides unobstructed views of
the city as well. Another Dubai landmark is the
Burj Al Arab, the world’s only seven-star hotel.
Shaped like a ship’s sail, the hotel stands on a
man-made island connected to Jumeirah Beach
by a curved bridge. For those interested in more
traditional architecture, Jumeirah Mosque
is Dubai’s largest and most photographed,
especially at dusk.
While these are all popular attractions,
what visitors really come to Dubai for is the
shopping. For luxury shopping, Dubai Mall—
the world’s largest shopping center—is the
place to go. If you’re looking for something
more traditional , then head to the old
commercial district of Deira, where souks
specializing in gold, spice, textiles and
more can be found.
With its unique mix of old and new, it’s
no surprise that Dubai attracts visitors from
all over the world. From modern skyscrapers
to timeless souks, this city has it all.
