Istanbul, the world’s most populous and
celebrated transcontinental city, is a bridge
between Europe and Asia that sits on the
Bosphorus Strait. Because of this geography,
the city has hosted travelers from East and West
for centuries, through the rise and fall of the
Byzantine (when it was called Constantinople)
and Ottoman empires up to the present.
Istanbul is Turkey’s historical and cultural center,
and many monuments to its glorious past
are still standing, just waiting to be explored.
Many of Istanbul ’s top his torical
attractions are located in the old city, within
walking distance from Sultanahmet Square.
The Hagia Sophia, with its huge dome, was
built as an Eastern Orthodox church in the
6th century, later turned into a mosque, and
is now preserved as a national museum.
Just to the south with its six minarets and
numerous domes lies the Blue Mosque, named
for its beautiful interior tiles. The mosque,
which was completed in 1617, continues to be
a center of Islamic faith and culture to this
day. Overlooking the Golden Horn just to
the north, the giant Topkapi Palace was home
to Ottoman sultans (and their many wives and
concubines) for almost 400 years.
In addition to historical flavor, Istanbul also
has plenty of modern attractions. The Istanbul
Modern, which opened in 2005, houses an
impressive collection of Turkish art. And Istiklal
Avenue, a pedestrian street running through
the Beyoglu and Galata districts, is lined with
fashionable cafés and boutiques. Or take a
nighttime stroll down Fransiz Sokagi (French
Street) with its gas street lamps and you’d swear
you were in Paris. Finally, dance the night away
at 360 Istanbul, the city’s hottest rooftop club.
