I’ve never seen the city from this side before. I knew the fog can get bad, but looking at it from out here, I didn’t realise just how thick it can get.

Well, smog is a type of air pollution. You’re right in the fact it does resemble fog and looks like a greyish-brown colored cloud that hangs in the air.
So this smog, what is it made from?
It's made up of these tiny particles and gases that come from things like cars, factories, and even some household products. When these pollutants are released into the air, they can react with sunlight and other chemicals in the atmosphere to form smog.

So why does it fill the city and make it hard to see sometimes?

That would explain how I got lost then! As I really struggled to see anything!
So What are the main causes of smog?
Let’s take this city for example. It’s more common here as there’s lots of activity from industries such as factories and power plants that burn fossil fuels for energy and for transportation production. As there are lots of people living in the city, as well as all the cars, buses, trucks and other vehicles these are major contributors to smog-forming pollutants.
I notice on the days when the smog is really bad, my cough gets a lot worse.
Yes, Smog is not good for people, animals, or plants because it can make them sick or hurt their growth. Sometimes you can smell smog, which might make breathing harder or make your eyes, nose and throat scratchy.
